Punch biopsy is one of the most accurate diagnostic tests for detecting skin lesions. It allows to get a full-thickness skin sample (when all skin layers are included: epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fatty tissue), which is mandatory for complete histological examination.

Punch biopsy is performed for the purpose of differential diagnosis of various skin diseases: neoplasms, pigmented lesions, inflammatory dermatosis and other chronic skin diseases. The presence of malignant tumor in a biopsy may change the extent of the planned operation.
